I don’t know how I managed to NOT post this gem. These are my girls. They go by the name of Nola Darling. They’re two young, fly, incredibly talented, very well educated, witty and wonderful rappers. The video was directed by my collective Bangpop! and has been making its rounds in the blogosphere for about a week now. Enjoy!

where was i?
soooooo i never finished my 30 days|30 artists journey because i embarked on an entirely new journey that ended up lasting for 3 months. i lived with a healer(that’s an entirely separate post), lost a bunch of weight, dramatically changed my lifestyle, told myself some difficult truths, fasted a few weeks, dealt with that which needed dealing, took a break from computers and social networks,...

day 6.
dudes and dudettes, day 6 will probably go down in my personal history as a one of the strangest and most beautiful days of my life. i wanna say so much more but i think i’m saving this one for my autobiography. :-)
i listened to bob marley today. ‘nough said.
i’m sure i learned something amazing but my brain is all mush right now. good mush, but still mush.
“til...
day 5.
day 5 was supposed to be for the incomparable etta james but i wasn’t near my music today. too busy running around and spending time with the family. :-) i’m thinking of adding her to another day or having her be day 31. haven’t decided. i’m also realizing that i need to come up with a system so this doesn’t happen every weekend…
i didn’t listen but...
day 4.
i’m late on my posting because i was watching don’t tell mom the babysitter’s dead last night and then i went to sleep. excuses excuses.
anyhootanany, soul brother number one rocked the house on day 4. it was so funky ‘round these parts.
i fell in love with his earlier work, particularly, the album Try Me by James Brown and his Famous Flames.
the album, as to be...

day 3.
no solid food today! woot woo!!!
i spent today with the white stripes.
lessons learned: less is waaaaaaaaaaaay more. the music is simple and to the point. a lot of the lyrics don’t make any sense and i really like that. and for some reason jack white makes me feel like i should be in somebody’s jook joint. that bluesy drag is everything to me!
quote of the day “in some...
day 2.
cassandra wilson.
lesson’s learned: she’s an effortless singing genre bending beautiful sultry marriage of folk classic and contemporary jazz boundless vocal creativity impeccable phrasing and storytelling kind of woman. DEFINITELY a master class in singing.
as for my other 30s, i didn’t go outside today. didn’t write yet but i will before i go to sleep.

day 1.
class is in session.
started a cleanse today. 30 days of juice and raw food. 30 musicians. 30 songs.
so basically, every day of my cleanse will be spent listening/studying a musician and working on(writing) one of my many unfinished songs. hopefully, by the end of my journey, i’m hoping to have 30 songs(finished or close-to-finished) and a newfound love/appreciation for those whose...

thank you 90.7, Santana, Sean and L.

confession
i’ve always wished i had some uber elaborate story about how i’ve been singing since i was three or how i nailed it my first 6 times on star search. but the truth is, i’ve always loved music and it didn’t really become a passion until a few years ago. everything has it’s own time, right?
i’m grateful for what i’ve been given.
the voice and the words.
